TIMEWALL - Stage design for contemporary dance, St.Mark's Church, New York

project list

The Time Wall elements are an alphabet, which we are learning to speak. Its language had to be developed by dialogue, between the dancers and the pieces, between the ideas and the forms emerging in space. We feel that we have entered  new grounds and structures where the words are yet to be invented. The curvature of the wall initially followed three different frequencies. The conceptual stage of the 'alphabet' was based on diverse frequencies as a result of similar, yet different curvatures of individual units. Different frequencies of assemblage are meant to be used for sitting, lying, standing, transporting, storing and wall building, as well as dispersal and forms of 'self-destructing.' One singular 'Z' unit for the Time Wall's assembly was chosen during the process of design because it was capable of 'storing' itself in a compact mass and of reconfiguring itself in various shapes of dispersal.
