The New Slought
Administrative Desk reflects on the reluctance of the Slought Foundation
towards a fixed identity, but also meets the administrative needs and
rapid growth of the organization through a design highlighting spatial
functionality. The desk is conceived as a ribbon which is then folded into
a three-dimensional meander. The meander marks the edge of Slought's
administration areas while not foreclosing on public engagement. At
the same time, it reflects its non-representational and ideologically
heterogeneous engagement with contemporary arts and publics. The choice of
materials--bare plywood and black recycled rubber sheets--have been
selected not only out of cost concerns, but also because they highlight
the non-expressive aspect that the organization felt their administrative
responsibilities should entail.
