SLALOM CITY MARIBOR, SLOVENIA, Europan 2003, Preselected projects

project list

The clue was found in the fact that Maribor is more famous for being compared to what it is not, most of all to the Alpine resort just outside of it. Being the last post before going up skiing, its suburbia gives a potential of playing a role of a residential resort for healthy mix between work and leisure. Therefore, the proposal breaks the matrix of suburban collective housing + shopping boxes into smaller, yet coherent, diverse, yet dynamic. 5,196 units to be built in three years at 430 million Euros, into a dozen of mix-use buildings. The hybrid uses a Manhattan logic to bring residents, incorporating a promise of longevity: the gyms and a series of various sport activities, different in each building. In that way, each individual building is a collective sign for a specific act of sport and recreation. Each of them, carrying an embedded entity of play now characterized the entire settlement, not as a village, since there is no agriculture, not as suburbia, since there are no lawns, but a slalom of public movement through living and exercising.
